By the Downtown Marina Team | June 2026

Most people who book a jet ski rental in Kelowna book one hour, come back to the dock grinning, and immediately ask if they can go back out. It's just what happens when you get on a Yamaha VX Deluxe Waverunner on Okanagan Lake for the first time, realize the lake is 135 km long, and that you've only seen about 2 of them.

Quick Answer: Downtown Marina rents the Yamaha VX Deluxe Waverunner from 210 Bernard Ave in Kelowna from May through September. It seats two, and the minimum rental is one hour. No boating licence required. The early morning window (8 to 10 AM) gets you calmer water and a lower rate. See current pricing and availability here.

What Okanagan Lake is Like on a Jet Ski

Okanagan Lake is typically calm in the morning, glassy in a way that makes the Waverunner feel almost frictionless, and the Kelowna waterfront at that hour is quiet enough that you can hear the water breaking against the hull. By midday, the wind often picks up and the ride can get choppier. By mid-afternoon on a hot summer Saturday, the lake is busy, with boats, other watercraft, and waves abound.

The early morning window (8 to 10 AM) runs at a discount from the regular hourly rate, and it's when the lake conditions are at their smoothest.

The Yamaha VX Deluxe: What You're Renting

The Waverunner seats two, the controls are straightforward, and staff walk you through everything before you leave the dock. (Most people are comfortable within the first five minutes) No boating licence required, we issue a temporary one at orientation.

One thing that surprises people: you can't beach it. The impeller will pull in sand, weeds, and debris from a shoreline and damage the watercraft, so jet ski rentals stay on the water. You can idle near shore, cut the engine and drift, swim off the side, but you're not parking it on a beach. If beach time is part of the plan, pair the jet ski with a kayak or paddleboard rental for that portion of the day.

How Long Should You Book a Jet Ski in Kelowna?

Duration How far you'll get What's in range
1 hour Downtown waterfront only Tugboat Bay, City Park Beach
2 to 4 hours South along the east shore or across the lake Boyce-Gyro Beach, Rotary Beach, West Kelowna

One hour is a good intro, but we’ve noticed most people wish they'd booked two. Two to four hours is enough time to get somewhere, swim off the side, and make it back without feeling rushed.

What to Know Before You Go

  • You leave with a full tank, you pay for what you use. When you return the Waverunner, you're charged for whatever fuel you burned. Don’t worry, these little Jetskis aren’t exactly gas guzzlers.

  • Speed limits exist. Under the William R. Bennett Bridge and in certain zones on Okanagan Lake, speed limits are enforced. Police boats patrol the lake during the season. Open water doesn't mean open throttle everywhere.

  • On hourly rentals, only the named renter can drive. If two people want to take turns at the helm, both need to be named at booking and go through orientation. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your rental starts.

  • Lifejackets are provided for everyone on board. You don't need to bring your own.

  • Book the morning if you can. The 8 to 10 AM slot is cheaper, and the lake's calmer. It's the move (if you’re awake in time).

Is a Jet Ski Rental in Kelowna Right for You?

Speed, water in your face, and the ability to cover a lot of lake in a short time… that's what the Yamaha VX Deluxe delivers. It's the closest to the water you can get on Okanagan Lake without being in it, and it's faster than anything else in the fleet except the wakesurf boats (which are built for a different purpose entirely).

Bringing more than one other person? A bowrider or pontoon rental is the better fit. The Waverunner seats two, so for groups it's a good add-on to a boat rental, not a replacement for one.

Never operated a personal watercraft before? The controls are simple, the orientation covers everything you need, and the lake around Downtown Marina is open enough that you're not navigating anything tight. Most people feel at home on it faster than they expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a boating licence to rent a jet ski in Kelowna?
A: No. Downtown Marina issues a temporary boating licence to all renters and walks you through the controls at orientation before you leave the dock. You'll need a valid photo ID and a credit card for the damage deposit. Minimum rental age is 19.

Q: How fast does the Yamaha VX Deluxe go?
A: Fast enough to be exciting on open water. Speed limits apply in certain zones on Okanagan Lake, including under the William R. Bennett Bridge, so it's not open throttle the whole time.

Q: Can two people ride the jet ski?
A: Yes. The Yamaha VX Deluxe seats two. If both people want to take turns operating it, both need to be listed at booking and complete the orientation before you head out.

Q: Can I park the jet ski on a beach in Kelowna?
A: No. Jet ski rentals have to stay on the water. The impeller pulls in sand, weeds, and debris from a shoreline and damages the watercraft. You can idle near shore and swim off the side, but beaching it isn't permitted.

Q: How much does a jet ski rental cost in Kelowna?
A: Rates vary by duration and change seasonally. See current jet ski rental pricing here. The early morning window (8 to 10 AM) runs at a discount, and the per-hour rate drops the longer you book.

Q: What should I bring for a jet ski rental?
A: Lifejackets are provided for everyone on board. Bring a valid photo ID, a credit card for the damage deposit, sunscreen, water, and clothes you don't mind getting soaked. You will get wet… That's kinda the point.
